San Angelo Community Center
Conceived as a simple stucco-clad box beneath a large perforated steel super-canopy, this project creates a potent civic structure for the park while complementing the adjacent 1970s gabled community center. The canopy harnesses, controls, and celebrates sunlight while tripling the interior's usable area, offering protection and shade. It serves as the framework for a Photo-Voltaic Array, making the building energy net-zero and providing the first for this Public Agency. Large skylights and glazed openings maximize natural light, minimizing artificial lighting needs. The project incorporates sustainable strategies like rainwater retention, renewable energy, and efficient ventilation systems, emphasizing fresh air and cross-ventilation.
