Ullman-McKeown Residence

Los Angeles, CA

Completion Date: 1991

The challenge was to meld this 60 year old house and garden while working with the existing language. The solution transformed and enlarged the house and garden by subtracting a big piece of the house and opening it up to the sky and garden.500 square feet of the existing house were given back to the garden, while opening entire backside. The transformed house and garden easily seemed twice as large as they did before. The foyer, originally closed off from the garden and sky, is now open by means of the new cupola. The addition of a grand four-foot deep arch transforms the foyer into a garden forecourt and invites the garden into the entry.
